University Life in the Netherlands
The Netherlands is a world leader in English-taught education. Hundreds of students come from Turkey every year. I came for work but I'm sharing what I learned from my student friends.
1University Types
WO: Research, theoretical - 3 year Bachelor. HBO: Applied, career-focused - 4 years including internship.
2Application Process
Through Studielink. Deadlines: Jan 15 (limited spots), May 1 (most). Documents: Diploma, IELTS 6.0-6.5, motivation letter.
3Financing
DUO: Grant+loan for EU students. Holland Scholarship: 5,000€ for non-EU. Orange Tulip: For Turkish students.
4Student Life
Join studieverenigingen. Bike is essential. Few classes, lots of assignments, group work matters. 6/10 is passing, 8+ is good.
5Housing
The hardest part. SSH waiting list is 1-2 years. Kamers.nl, Room.nl, Facebook groups. Outside Amsterdam is cheaper.
💡Rose's Student Tips
- Apply for housing at least 6 months early - nightmare in Amsterdam
- Research DUO financing options
- Part-time max 16 hours (full-time in summer)
- OV student discount is weekday OR weekend - choose wisely
- Buy a bike - check Marktplaats.nl for second-hand
